We learned earlier this week that the Miles for Mental Health 5k was cancelled, but we do want to take this moment to shine a light on Carroll County Mental Health Advocates and why they are important to Carrollton Rainbow and members of the queer community of Carrollton and the west Georgia area.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community are more than twice as likely as heterosexual people to experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, according to the American Psychiatric Association. They are also less likely to receive effective, compassionate care.
It is important to note that identifying as LGBTQ+ is not in and of itself a mental illness or disorder. Instead, it is a core component of someone’s identity that makes them more likely to struggle with their mental health due to a variety of risks and hardships.
Carroll County Mental Health Advocates provides critical support services, resources, and education to individuals and families impacted by mental illness and addiction and the Carroll County community. Their work is incredibly valuable and important and we look forward to another opportunity to partner with them in the future!
