My name is Mark Auclair. I was bitten by a radioactive spider. And for ten years, I've been the one and only..wait, that was Peter Parker. My origin story is much less exciting, but here we go.
I grew up in Norcross, listened to a lot of punk rock and started building websites in the GeoCities era of Web 1.0. I moved to Carrollton to go to UWG, joined a fraternity, met my amazing wife, got a degree in Mass Comm, had a kid and 20+ years later I'm still here in Carrollton!
My daughter came out as queer at the same time the country started turning inward on itself and the LGBTQ+ community became a consistent target of political fodder. While I don't remember exactly what I said, I do remember that I wanted to make sure that they knew they had our love unconditionally and always, regardless of the 100,000 other thoughts that were happening in that moment.
As a parent - goal #1 is to get your child out the door safe, prepared and setup for success in life. In that moment, As a hetero, cis white guy - I became absolutely useless as I had zero base knowledge on how to accomplish that in this environment. As my wife and I navigated the new waters as parents, Carrollton Rainbow became a resource that at least gave us some hope for survival in this community.
In June 2023, Carrollton Rainbow put out a post that they were looking for new board members with non-profit experience. I've spent the last thirteen years volunteering in various roles as an alumnus of the West Georgia chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and I am currently serving the final year of my five year term-and-a-half as the Chairman of the Board of Advisors. I've made it my mission to find equally passionate alumni board members that can lead our chapter into the future and have found myself shouldering much less of the responsibilities as other people have stepped up. When the opportunity came up, my wife Ronda and I jumped in and officially became a part of the crew in July 2023!
As the organization has come into its own over the last year, I fell into the website administrator position and accepted the role of secretary of the board. Volunteering and giving back will always be part of my life and I'm excited to see what this organization will grow into! I'm always open to a conversation and willing to help when and where I can!
